Description
The Grimm from Hollow Knight. This was a lot of fun (and work) to create. As always I study in game images to come up with a design, print out multiple prototypes to test fit, printability, and ease of putting together. This is probably my most complex mask yet and requires a bit more work to put it together than my other designs, I think you will find that it is worth it.
Some basic design notes: My first design may have looked a little bit better than my final version, but you are almost completely blind while wearing it. The new version has larger eyes that are a bit higher up and more centered to decrease the chance of you walking into walls. Although I have an AMS, I choose not to use that in my designs. I do this for 2 reasons: 1 I don't want my designs to be inaccessible to those without AMS, and I don't really like the waste of switching filament mid print.
Boost Me I don't want to count the hours put into this design. But I am happy to share my work freely with everyone, and I hope you like it as much as I do. If you want to say thanks, I always appreciate a boost or you sharing your pictures. It has been so fun to see the community enjoying these prints! Assembly instructions
- First you should attach the black eye outlines into the white mask. Although it should theoretically snap in, this hasn't been my experience because of slight warping and imperfections in the black eye outlines. You will probably need to shave off a tiny bit from the black outlines, and will need some glue to ensure it sticks (I would recommend some tape or clamps to hold the black inserts in place while it dries. - Next you should put in the red eyes. I went through many iterations to get eyes that will fit tightly, print nicely and don't have a nightmarish amount of support to remove. That said, you will probably have to do some work to clean up the supports (I use an exacto knife and some needle nose pliers.). The eyes can be delicate, so I would save your old man muscles for opening pickle jars. - Next you should insert the black boxes into each of the horns, a little glue is probably a good idea. Once you have those set, it should probably be obvious where they fit into the black top of head. Sometimes the top of head warps slightly in printing, but this shouldn't be a problem with a bit of glue holding those horns in place (the boxes are designed to make it easy to align and put together, but aren't really reliable for holding the horns on. - Finally you should connect the white face plate to the black top of head. I added a few little guides that should make this fairly easy. Again, you will want to use some super glue to make sure it stays in place.
Sizing
Will this mask fit my head? Good question, but hard to answer. The mask in the main profile is scaled to 94% my original design, I did this to fit the pieces on the print bed, but it also fits my adult sized head well ( a 23" ball cap circumference and 27" from crown to jaw circumference). If I wear a thick winter hat and increase both of those numbers by 1.5" to 24.5" and 28.5" it still fits, but just barely. Unless you are known for your large head, it will probably fit.
But what about a model sized for my teenager or child? Well if my head is 23" and I am sizing it for a 21" head, I would change the scaling on each part of the print from 94% to 94% * 21/23 = 91.3%. If you are scaling it down substantially, it will probably have issues as some pieces may be too thin to print properly (sorry for the cats that wanted to wear the mask, your welcome to the cats who someone else wanted you to wear the mask).
One could argue that I have gotten carried away with Hollow Knight and Silksong related designs… I am sharing the list and links here so you can find them easily, I hope you enjoy them!
