Description
Tired of fruit flies taking over your kitchen?
Turn a regular-mouth Mason jar into a simple, reusable and highly effective fruit fly trap using only about 8g of filament. No disposable traps, no complicated assembly and almost no filament required.
Just print it, add the liquid bait, and put it to work.
Why This Design?
This fruit fly trap was designed to be as simple and efficient as possible:
- Only ~8g of filament - Fast and easy to print - No supports required - No assembly required - Reusable - Easy to clean - Fits regular-mouth Mason jars - No pesticides required It's a tiny print that can be kept around and reused whenever fruit flies show up.
How It Works
This trap is designed to work with a liquid vinegar and dish soap solution .
Fruit flies are strongly attracted to the smell of fermented liquids such as apple cider vinegar.
The important part is the dish soap .
Normally, the surface tension of the apple cider vinegar allows a tiny insect to land on the liquid without immediately sinking. Adding a few drops of dish soap reduces that surface tension.
When the fruit flies contact the liquid, they can no longer remain supported on the surface and become trapped in it.
The printed lid helps guide the flies toward the bait while keeping the setup clean and contained.
Important – Do Not Use Solid Bait
Do not use banana peels, pieces of fruit or other solid bait with this trap.
Solid bait can attract fruit flies, but it does not provide the trapping mechanism this design is intended to use.
For best results, use:
Apple cider vinegar + a few drops of dish soap.
The vinegar attracts the fruit flies, while the dish soap breaks the liquid's surface tension and allows the trap to actually catch them.
Setup
- Add a small amount of apple cider vinegar to your Mason jar. - Add a few drops of dish soap . - Gently mix without creating excessive foam. - Install the printed trap. - Place it near your fruit bowl, compost bin, recycling or wherever fruit flies are active. That's it.
Compatibility
Designed for regular-mouth Mason jars .
Please note that regular-mouth and wide-mouth Mason jars have different opening sizes. This model is intended specifically for regular-mouth jars .
