Description

This file contains the slats for the Drop Lamp , designed to be cut from 3 mm sheets .

The laser-cut version is a great alternative to 3D printing the slats, offering a much faster production time while giving the lamp a warm and elegant natural finish.

No Laser? No Problem!

If you don't have access to a laser cutter, you can still build the complete lamp. A second print profile is included in this post with the slats ready to be 3D printed. This allows you to make the entire project using only your 3D printer, and you can also play with different filament colors to create your own combinations.

Boost Me ✨ If you like this combination of laser cutting and 3D printing, please consider giving this project a Boost! 🚀 Your support encourages me to create and share more hybrid projects like this. Thank you!

You can build the entire lamp using a single wood color , or combine two or three different wood tones to create unique patterns and completely change its appearance. Different compatible wood sheets can be found in the BOM , making it easy to experiment with combinations and create your own version.

The files can be cut using both 10W and 40W laser systems . Since the geometry consists mainly of simple cuts, the process is fast, considerably reducing production time compared with 3D printing all the individual slats.

The layout has been optimized for standard 300 × 300 mm sheets with 3 mm thickness . To produce the complete set of slats, two 300 × 300 mm sheets / cutting jobs are required .

Acrylic Option

The slats can also be made from 3 mm acrylic , opening up even more possibilities for customization. Transparent, translucent, frosted or colored acrylic can create a completely different effect, especially when combined with the internal light source. Just make sure that the material is exactly 3 mm thick to maintain the correct fit with the 3D-printed structure.

For illumination, the lamp was designed to work with the Bambu Lab Lamp Kit or, for a simpler and cordless setup, an LED Tea Light Candle . This makes it easy to adapt the project depending on where and how you want to use the lamp.

The slats are part of a hybrid project combining laser cutting and 3D printing : the lamp structure/base is 3D printed, while the decorative slats can either be laser cut from wood or acrylic, or produced using the alternative 3D-printable version.

This gives you the freedom to choose between a fully 3D-printed lamp or a combination of PLA with real wood or acrylic , creating very different results from the same design.

⚠️ Due to tolerances between different filament types and brands, the slats may fit tighter or looser. In all cases, they should be glued to the bottom base for a secure assembly.

And with the arrival of the Bambu Lab R1 , this is exactly the kind of project I’m excited to explore: combining 3D printing and laser cutting in a single design and taking advantage of the best of both manufacturing processes.
