Description

General

Pressing in camshaft seals can be challenging and if not pressed to the right depth or pressed in crooked, they will leak. Volvo used to make a special tool (9995718 or 999 5718), but it is hard to get and if you can get it, it's very expensive.

I took measurements on the actual cylinder head to reverse engineer the dimensions of the tool, since I did not have one either. This tool will press in the cam seal to the right depth and ensure it sits straight.

Versions of the Installation Tool

- Flush: The seal has to be installed flush with the housing according to the official instructions. This is achieved with this variant

- +1mm: If there is an excessive wear groove in the cam, you can drive the seal in a bit deeper. There is no official approval from the manual to do this!

- +2mm: Even deeper than the +1mm version. Using the 2mm depth is not recommended because the seal might sit on the chamfer of the VVT unit and not seal properly (see last picture).

Print Settings

- I used PLA, other polymers will probably work as well (as long as they are hard)

- ≥50% Infill for maximum strength

- ≥3 perimeters recommended

- The 7mm holes for the bolts can be tight, you might have to drill it out or run the screws through it a couple of times

Additional Hardware

- You can reuse the original bolts for pressing in the seal.

Disclaimer

When using printed/plastic tools for pressing, there is the possibility that they will shatter or break etc. Be responsible when using the tool and wear appropriate protection. I'm not responsible for any damage or injuries.

Please consider liking and posting a make if you find this useful 🙂 It took quite a lot of time to make this tool, so if you're a tool company and want to make a fortune with the tools, perhaps send me some money for filament 😅

Update 20.05.2025: Fix chamfer on 1mm tool
