Description

I noticed that there are a number of Gridfinity trays out there for the Mitutoyo 0-1" micrometers, but very few for 1-2" and 2-3". Additionally there are relatively few Gridfinity-based designs for Kennedy's machinist toolboxes; the main reason I believe is the shallowness of the drawers do not mesh well with the wasted vertical space entailed by the Gridfinity grids. So I set out to address both these problems with this model as part of a larger project of slowly organizing my toolbox.

This is a four-piece drawer organizer that holds a matched set of three Mitutoyo digital micrometers — 0-1" (293-348-30) , 1-2" (293-345-30), and 2-3" (293-342-30). Each micrometer drops into a contoured pocket shaped to its own silhouette so the set stays organized.

It also has storage for accessories. Below the 1-2" and 2-3" thimbles are half-round cradles for the 1" and 2" standards; they use a shallow single radius so the standard sits high and is easy to retrieve. Just inboard of each thimble is a thin on-edge slot (about 1.75 mm wide × 6 mm deep) for that micrometer's spanner/adjustment wrench.

The assembled tray is large (~252 × 251 × 26 mm), so the mesh files are split into four tiles that can print on a Prusa MK3S+ bed and sit side by side in the drawer: front-left (0-1" holder), front-right, back-left, and back-right (the 1-2" and 2-3" holders, carrying the standard cradles and wrench slots). The largest piece is about 168 × 167 mm. I made them this way to optimize drawer space; keeping each micrometer to a discrete Gridfinity grid pattern results in a substantial amount of wasted space.

Printing: Print the parts as oriented in the STLs: flat, with the open pockets facing up. No supports should be required. Suggested settings are 0.2 mm layers, 3 perimeters, 15-20% infill, in PLA or PETG. The wrench slots are narrow (1.75 mm), so use a 0.4 mm or smaller nozzle for them to resolve cleanly.

Fit note: the pockets and cradles are tailored to these exact Mitutoyo models and one of the wide shallow drawers of the Kennedy 26" 11-Drawer Machinists Chest (3611B). If your micrometers or standards differ, check the dimensions (or scale) before committing to all four pieces — printing the front-left 0-1" tile first makes a good fit test.
