Description

This is my current take on supporting the Railcore Y rail with a backer to reinforce the axis and reduce ghosting.

Holes can and should be tapped for M3 hardware, simplifying installation and (theoretically) improving performance (a bit). The backer itself is designed to be manufactured with a service that can cut, bend, and tap 1/8" (3.2mm) metal. I used 5052 aluminum from SendCutSend . Make sure to select bending and tapping options as appropriate!

Update January 2nd, 2023 : Added version without tabs designed to be used with the original X carriages. See tabless_rc_backer.dxf.

The backer is designed with tabs that extend into the X carriages, since my (simplistic and amateur) simulations indicated that it reduced nozzle movement by about 25%. My modifications to the carriages include simply removing 3.2mm from the right side of the carriage for the backer to fit. I printed them in Atomic CF PETG.

The X carriages each require two M3 inserts and associated M3 bolts to secure the rail from the bottom and side of the carriage. They will also each require an 50mm M5 socket cap bolt and matching nut for the idler stack.

Holes line up with my Misumi linear rails. I have not verified that other brands use the same hole pattern.

X Carriages are derived from those in the Railcore project. See https://railcore.org/ and https://www.printables.com/model/160936-railcorer-ii-300-zlzlt for originals and further details.
