Description
I keep the 28.6mm (1 1/8") steerer tube from an old fork handy for when I'm pulling the fork from a bike for maintenance. This allows me to push in the old steerer as I remove the fork which will hold the stem and headset parts in place. This looks like a top cap but serves to align the fork steerer tube and the old steerer tube. Hopefully the photos will make this a bit clearer, but once you print this and attach it to an old fork like a top cap, you can use it like so:
- Remove the top cap on the fork you're removing.
- Remove the brake caliper and anything that would keep the fork from dropping out.
- Place the scrap fork steerer with this thing in place on top of the fork you're going to work on.
- Loosen the stem bolts, and then push the fork out by pushing the scrap steerer tube down into the stem and through the headset
- Remove the fork for maintenance, leaving the scrap steerer in place until you're ready to reassemble.
