Description
UPDATE: 09/08/24
Added variant for eSun cardboard spools (AMS SDH Body eSUN - Cardboad Spool).
UPDATE: 29/04/23
Added labeling to the SDH Cap (SDH Cap - Labeled) to prevent accidental spills of silica-gel beads during removal.
DESCRIPTION
The Spool Desiccant Holder (SDH) is designed to be mounted in the center core of a filament spool of filament during storage to help keep the filament dry using reusable silica-gel or drying packs. The threaded SDH Cap tightens and screws in place, after the SDH Body has been inserted into the center of a spool of filament, preventing the SDH from falling out.
The SDH has finger tabs that allow for easy securement and removal. The conical ends of the SDH allow for optimized distribution of reusable silica-gel beads by maximizing the internal surface area. No supports are needed during printing or extra assembly/tools for installation and removal from the filament spool, just a cap and body – simple!
SDH Body and SDH Cap are easily differentiated and identifiable (refer to attached images) from each other to prevent the spilling of reusable silica-gel beads during removal. The SDH Body has a ring of holes surrounding the base flanges while the SDH Cap does not.
Compatibility
The SDH is designed to be low-profile so the spool will still fit inside the original packaging bag and/or box with it in the center. The SDH (SDH Body Bambu Lab_Generic Spool.STEP) is compatible with Bambu Lab AMS and most filament storage boxes or filament vacuum resealable bags. Additionally, I've included a SDH Body (SDH Body eSUN.STEP) that is compatible with eSUN filaments. Accommodates filament spool inner core widths of 50-55mm (eSUN spools) and 60-70mm (Bambu Lab spools/Prusament spools/most other generic spools).
Print Recommendations (NO SUPPORTS NEEDED)
- PETG or another material with higher temperature resistance (so you don't have to worry about removing the canister when you put your spools in a heated filament dryer). - PLA/PLA+ works fine within a Bambu Lab AMS or a cool filament storage container without heating (MAKE SURE TO REMOVE PLA/PLA+ COMPONENTS BEFORE USING A HEATED FILAMENT DRYER). - Use a 0.6mm nozzle at 0.3mm layer height for faster print time; 0.2mm layer height if using a 0.4mm nozzle. - 5% infill with Grid pattern works well on a Bambu Lab X1-Carbon and a Prusa Mk3s (tweak according to your personal preference). - Print orientation is shown in the images with the flanges contacting the build plate and printed upright.
Conclusion
To date, my designs are free to download and use. If you like them and want to contribute to my coffee addiction & help fund the filaments I need for prototyping, a donation of $2 to paypal.me will be greatly appreciated.
