Description

Outcrop on private farmland near Whitton Dean, south of Rothbury, Northumberland.

This exposure is one of a number carved areas of outcrop found in close proximity. This section is referenced ‘North Lordenshaw 6t’ on the Beckensall Archive (BA) and was added to ERA by NADRAP in 2008. NADRAP Team 3 describes:

“A very large white prominent outcrop with quarried edges and a small motif of cup, groove, separate cup and separate faint linear groove near to the central grassy island. Grooved cup is clearly defined, groove extends at least 0.30-0.40m before being covered by turf. Other cup has layering as if by erosion/water pooling/but is very regular and unlikely to be naturally formed in totality.”

Model created from 12 stereo pairs captured by Joe Gibson of NADRAP Team 3 in February 2006. The imagery forms part of the full NADRAP archive deposited with Historic England and Northumberland County Council.
