Description

Let there be light !

This is a LED Light Ring for the Dremel 220 Drill Press Rotary Tool Workstation Stand made out of a car/motorcycle auxiliary white LED headlight ring from AliExpress (search for "Halo Rings", typically around than 5$). These are super bright and provide uniform lighting all around the piece you want to drill.

I provide a STL file for a single piece model, but with more overhang and support to remove, and also a two pieces model (joined with M3 screw & inserts) with minimal support required. The two pieces assembly is the one shown in picture here. I have rotated the switch on the single piece to make it more compact (dedicated picture for this), and also added 2 hooks to hold the current limiter PCB.

I used a LED ring with an internal diameter of 80mm (various size available). This light ring is attached to the bottom of the main shaft of the rack & pinion mechanism of the drill press. So the light ring moves up & down with the drill, and also follows the drill tilt when the drill is angled.

From below, the drill holder is originally bolted to the rack pin with a M8x10mm long (1.25mm coarse thread) hex bolt. As there won't be enough room for a regular 13mm (M8) hex socket within the new piece, the new bolt needs to be an Allen-head assembly bolt instead of a regular hex head bolt, and the M8 washer shall be replaced by one with an OD of 16mm instead of 20mm. Also, as to accomodate the extra thickness of the new piece inserted to hold the light ring, this bolt needs to be replaced with a longer bolt of a minimum of 3mm or more (M8x15mm or 20mm).

One last thing regarding this bolt, once the LED ring will be in place, this bolt won't be acessible anymore. So this bolt needs to be installed and tighten before snapping the LED ring inside its holder.

Also before snapping the LED ring in, you may want to index the LED within its lens so the wires are coming out at top (they are randomly inserted in their lens and wires may end up being at the complete opposite side), just use a small jeweler screwdriver to snap out the LED from the lens and reinsert at the correct position.

Make sure the section of the piece under the M8 bolt is printed with 100% infill as it will be exposed to the bolt pressure.

I made a small box embedded to the light ring body to carry the current limiter, a power switch, and a power jack.

The LED ring runs on 12v (draws around 325mAdc) and is controlled with an included PT4115 step down buck converter & constant current driver through the wire. I cut the wire to the strict minimum required and remove the current driver enclosure so it is smaller and fits better inside the box.

The two pieces assembly has text imprint you can use to highlight the text with a fine point marker if desired.

I include a miniature SPST rocker switch (8.2x13mm) and 5.5x2.5mm barrel DC power jack (both available cheap on AliExpress). I have kept all the power adapters from old toys and electronic devices my whole life. Now it's time to use one. This is a good use case for the one from my previous router. Otherwise, it is also possible to buy a power adapter from AliExpress for very low cost.

PS The strange circular cut on the box of the two-piece assembly isn't a mistake; it's intentional. The single piece doesn't have that, as it is much more compact and has sufficient clearance from above. Please zoom in on the right-side view image of the drill. I also included a dedicated picture of the wiring for the single piece with the more compact rotated switch arrangement.

Enjoy !
