Fishing Reel Kit - including (LED) bobber and tackle boxes

This kit is a variation of my (I’m happy and humbled to say – popular) Hobo Fishing Reel Kit . The main difference is the interior: this version includes two small tackle boxes and my new bobber/float model. Otherwise, it works the same way as the original.

Whichever version you pick, I hope it brings you joy – and plenty of good catches!

How it Works

These compact fishing kits don’t have the same casting power or control as a regular fishing rod. But what they lack in finesse, they make up for in lightweight simplicity and portability*.

Just bait the hook, cast your line, and secure the reel to a tree (or another anchor) with its cord. While the reel does the fishing for you, you’re free to relax by the water or set up camp.

The Reel

* Top cap: Screws on/off to keep the line secure during travel.

* Hook storage cap: A small removable cap lets you tuck away the hook (still attached to the line) when not in use, so you don’t have to re-tie it every time.

* Line start hole: A small hole at the top for threading and securing the start of your line.

* Hollow body: Closed off with a bottom cap. This cap doubles as the bobber holder – unscrew it and the bobber comes with it. It also has two holes so you can attach a hand strap.

The Bobber / Float

A versatile float that works both as a bait float and as a casting weight when you need extra distance. It’s built in three parts:

* Top section: Can be printed in light or transparent material to hold a small LED light**, making it visible even in low light. Without an LED, it simply provides more buoyancy.

* Middle section: A chamber for weight adjustment – add lead shots, sand, gravel, or even water for longer, more accurate casts.

* Bottom section: A smart line attachment system. No need to cut your line – just slide it in and secure with one of the included screws. Use the smaller screw for a sliding float, or the larger one to lock it in place.

The float fits neatly into a custom case molded into the reel’s bottom cap. A dedicated slot keeps the extra bobber endcap in place, which also locks the float securely inside.

The Tackle Boxes

Inside the reel are two small tackle boxes. It’s not much, but enough for short hiking or camping trips.

* Small box: Space for hooks and attachments.

* Larger box: Room for a couple of small lures (I fit three in mine).

Tips & Extras

* If you’re new to hobo reels, there are plenty of great tutorials on YouTube – just search “Hobo Reel fishing.”

** The LED light for the bobber is easy to find online. Look for “Round LED,” “LED Flashlight for Paper Lanterns,” or “Balloon LED” on sites like Temu, AliExpress, or Wish.

Printing Notes

* No supports needed.

* Make sure each part is oriented correctly on the print plate.

* Use a little glue to keep small pieces in place.
