reGreen SKADIS Pots Kitchen Garden Collection
Turn your kitchen wall or another wall into a living herb garden. This collection of five self-watering planters is designed specifically for the IKEA SKADIS pegboard system. Each planter includes a built-in water reservoir, a removable perforated WickPlate, and a water-filling dome, so your herbs stay hydrated even when you forget to water them.
Unlike typical SKADIS planters that are just pots with hooks, these are engineered growing systems. The wick mechanism draws water from the reservoir up into the soil, keeping moisture consistent without overwatering. The dome on the front wall lets you top up the reservoir without disturbing the plant or removing the planter from the wall.
Each size in the collection is matched to a specific type of plant, based on root depth, soil volume, and water consumption. Print the one you need, or print them all for a complete kitchen wall garden.
The Collection
1. Sprout S (12 x 8 x 7 cm) Best for: microgreens, baby basil, rosemary cuttings, small mint starts, decorative succulents.
This is the compact entry point. At just 12 cm long, you can fit 4-6 of these on a original single SKADIS panel. The soil volume (~0.35 L) is perfect for shallow-rooted plants like microgreens, cress, or individual herb seedlings that you plan to transplant later. Also works well for small succulents if you skip the wick system and use well-draining soil.
Why this size: microgreens need only 3-5 cm of growing medium. The 7 cm height provides exactly that with room for the 1 cm reservoir underneath. Anything smaller and the reservoir would be too shallow to be useful.
2. Herb M (16 x 8 x 8 cm) Best for: basil, parsley, cilantro, mint, thyme, oregano, chives.
The workhorse of the collection. One planter, one full-sized herb bush. The 16 cm length gives enough room for a mature basil or mint plant with proper root space. The 1 cm reservoir holds enough water for 2-3 days of normal consumption by a single herb plant.
Why this size: a single kitchen herb needs roughly 0.5 L of soil and 10-12 cm of root depth. This planter provides exactly that. Narrower than Garden L, so it doesn't stick out too far from the wall, but deep enough for a healthy root system.
3. Garden L (25 x 10 x 8 cm) Best for: green onions, chives, arugula, cress, a row of cilantro or dill.
The long format is the key differentiator from everything else on MakerWorld. While most SKADIS planters are round or square, this 25 cm trough lets you plant a whole row of greens. Perfect for green onions (plant 8-10 bulbs side by side) or scatter-sow arugula and cress for continuous harvest.
Why this size: green onions and similar row crops need length, not depth. The 10 cm width provides adequate soil volume (~1.1 L) while the elongated shape makes efficient use of original SKADIS horizontal space. Two of these side by side cover most of a 56 cm panel.
4. Harvest XL (25 x 12 x 10 cm) Best for: leaf lettuce, spinach, chard, large basil bushes, dwarf kale.
The big one. Designed for plants that need serious root room and drink heavily. The deeper profile (12 cm wide, 10 cm tall) means more soil (~1.8 L).
Why this size: leaf lettuce and spinach need at least 10-12 cm of root depth and at least 1.5 L of soil per plant to produce meaningful harvests. This is the minimum size that delivers real food from a wall, not just garnish.
5. Pepper (18 x 12 x 12 cm) Best for: compact chili peppers (Apache, Basket of Fire, Prairie Fire, Numex Twilight), ornamental peppers, Micro Tom tomatoes.
Taller and deeper than the herbs planters, built for plants that fruit. Compact chili varieties stay under 25-30 cm tall and have shallow enough roots to thrive in 12 cm of depth.
Why this size: chili peppers need at least 1.4 L of soil and consistent moisture during fruiting. The 18 cm length fits the root spread of compact varieties without being as wide as the Garden L. The 12 cm height is the minimum for productive pepper growing in a wall-mounted system. Keep to 2-3 of these per original SKADIS panel due to weight when wet (~550-650 g each).
How the Self-Watering System Works
Each planter has three components:
The planter body has a solid bottom that forms the water reservoir. The front wall features a dome-shaped opening for adding water directly to the reservoir using a squeeze bottle or narrow-spout watering can, without removing the planter from the wall.
The WickPlate sits inside the planter on an internal ledge, separating the soil from the reservoir below. Its perforations allow capillary wicks (strips of felt, cotton rope, or synthetic wick cord) to hang down into the reservoir. The soil sits on top of the plate, and moisture wicks upward naturally.
SKADIS hooks on the back wall mount directly into the pegboard holes. The hooks follow the SKADIS 4 cm grid spacing. Larger models include stabilizing pegs that lock into holes one row below to prevent the planter from rocking under the weight of wet soil.
To set up: thread 2-3 wicks through the WickPlate holes, letting them dangle below. Place the plate on the ledge inside the planter. Fill with soil, plant your herbs, and fill the reservoir through the dome. The wicks will keep the soil evenly moist.
Soil Recommendations
For best results with the wick system, use a lightweight, well-draining mix: 70% peat-free potting mix (or coconut coir) + 20% perlite + 10% vermiculite. The perlite prevents compaction and ensures the wicks can draw water effectively. Avoid heavy garden soil or mixes with large bark chunks as they block capillary action.
For the Pepper planter, add slow-release fertilizer pellets at planting time. Fruiting plants need more nutrients than herbs, and the wick system tends to flush soluble fertilizers downward into the reservoir.
For succulents in the Sprout S, skip the wicks entirely and use a cactus/succulent mix with 50% perlite. Leave the WickPlate holes open for drainage/
Print Settings
The planter is water-resistant and features wall hooks, but it may not be fully waterproof, this depends entirely on the quality of your print and filament quality. Please note, therefore, that we cannot be held responsible for any damage that may occur when using our model . Please take care and use high-quality filament and do high-quality printing.
No assembly tools required.
Always distribute weight evenly across the panel. Avoid clustering all heavy planters on one side.
Tips for Success
Start with the Herb M. It is the most versatile size and the best introduction to the system. Basil and mint are nearly impossible to kill with consistent watering, and the wick system provides exactly that.
Check the reservoir every 3-4 days. You can peek through the dome or lift the planter slightly to feel the weight. Light = empty, heavy = full. Clean the WickPlate between growing seasons. Pull it out, rinse off old roots and mineral deposits, and re-thread fresh wicks. Use a grow light strip above the SKADIS panel if your kitchen wall does not get direct sunlight. Most herbs need 6+ hours of light daily.
