Perky-Pet Squirrel-Be-Gone MAX Bird Feeder Insert

I have a Perky-Pet Squirrel-Be-Gone Max Wild Bird feeder, and the seed retention guards get nibbled off by the squirrels.  This causes the seed to flow extensively when birds peck even a few seeds out, and replacement guards do not last long.  I was losing seed and money big time.  I would fill the feeder, and it would be empty in a day.  I made this insert to offset losses.  This insert keeps the seed back from the exit until birds peck and pull it.  It is large enough to allow peanuts to exit.  I do not buy seed with peanuts, but there is the occasional one in the bag every now and again, and they still are able to pass out the opening.  I did not slope the cylinder sides tapering down to the feed exit port.  I thought this might bind the seeds from traveling down.  I think I was correct because the seed fully disperses, and fewer seeds get caught waiting at the door, which creates that hole-closing moisture trap between the seed and rainwater.  With this insert, the seed sits loosely at the opening, and the birds peck every seed.  If it sits mounded, they only eat off of the top, and the rain wets what sits in the door.  Unfortunately, the birds tend not to pull it out, leading to a foul seed-clogging mess.  Needless to say, now a fully filled feeder can last five to seven days, depending on the bird overload.  Bird parents, fledglings, and I are all benefiting from this upgrade.  Save some seed and feed wildlife longer with this minor modification.
