Quarter-Turn Button Latch

A compact and robust surface-mounted quarter-turn “button” latch for cabinet doors, enclosure panels, cages, and other DIY projects. Unlike traditional quarter-turn latches, this design mounts entirely on the outside of the door and requires no large cut-outs or through-holes.

The latch operates with a simple 90° rotation . In the closed position, the rotating arm swings over the edge of the door or panel, preventing it from opening. The handle naturally rests in the downward position , allowing gravity to help keep the latch closed, making it well suited for applications exposed to vibration such as campers, workshop cabinets, or portable equipment.

The design consists of only a few printed parts, assembles without springs, and can be mounted permanently using screws, double-sided adhesive tape, or glue.

Installation & Assembly

The latch is designed as a completely surface-mounted assembly and requires no large holes in the door.

Mounting Options

Two installation methods are supported:

Option 1 – Screwed Mounting (Recommended)

- Position the outer body where the latch should be mounted. - Use the mounting holes in the printed body as a drilling template. - Drill suitable pilot holes for the mounting screws. - Assemble the latch as described below. - Secure the completed assembly using the mounting screws. Option 2 – Adhesive Mounting

The assembled latch can also be attached using:

- Double-sided mounting tape - Construction adhesive - CA glue or epoxy This option is suitable for lightweight doors or where drilling is not desired.

Assembling the Latch

- Snap the printed parts together until fully seated. - Insert the main countersunk screw through the handle and into the outer body. - Tighten the screw until the handle rotates smoothly. Do not overtighten the center screw.

The clamping force can be adjusted depending on your application:

- Looser → easier operation - Tighter → increased resistance against accidental opening due to vibration Adjust the screw until the desired balance between smooth movement and holding force is achieved.

No additional hardware or springs are required.

Recommended Hardware

The original design was developed around commonly available countersunk screws.

Main Pivot Screw

Required:

- Quantity: 1 - M4 × 8–10 mm - Countersunk head This screw forms the pivot for the rotating handle and is required for proper operation.

Mounting Screws

Required:

- Quantity: 2 - M3 or M4 countersunk screws or woodscrews - Length according to your mounting surface Choose the screw length appropriate for your material thickness and desired fixing depth.
