I know what you're probably thinking, a metal scarper, this looks scary!
Well, if you follow the directions, and use it properly, it's not, its a game changer! In my experience any print scraper with a plastic edge very quickly deteriorates into a useless "pusher" not a scraper. What a waste of material! Plastic-edged scrapers are toys that wind up in landfills, this is a business tool.
I've been printing full plates of small PETG printed parts pretty much nonstop for years & I've had my fair share of full plates fail early on in the print. When you catch a failure early, you can't just bend the plate to release the job as the thin parts will flex with the plate and they absolutely will not come off (especially with PETG). Initially I would carefully hold a metal razor at the perfect angle with my hands to carefully fix these occasional nightmares. This is how the tool was born. Meet the infinity scraper!
Here are some highlights:
- Durable - the modified steel edge of your razor blade will last exponentially longer than any plastic edge - Versatile - it's the only scraper I use, it's perfect for accurately releasing completed prints, fixing disasters, or gently scraping & cleaning micro particulate/buildup off of your print bed. - Safe – by slightly “rolling” the edge of the steel razor you prevent the sharp edge from digging into your build plate - Consistent – the plastic bottom edge of the infinity scraper handle functions as an angle guide, it glides on the surface of the build plate to ensure a consistent angle of attack as you scrape, to prevent damage to your plate. - Green - The long-lasting, metal edge guarantees longevity, no more perpetually wasted & discarded plastic scraper material. How it works:
It's all about the angle and edge of the blade. A standard rectangular razor blade has two edges, the primary leading edge and the secondary bevel. By intentionally running the leading edge of your blade across a another piece of steel or stone you curl/dull the edge of the razor upwards away from the build plate allowing the razor to safely slide across the plate , rather than digging into it. In addition, t he handle of the infinity scraper has been designed to optimize the angle of the blade in relation to the build plate when scraping. the blade needs to be almost parallel to the build plate for safe use, this is very difficult to achieve with your fingers, but with this handle you can get the angle dialed in perfectly every time.
Using the infinity scraper:
- Mark the upward facing face of the blade with a marker so you know which side faces up later. - At approximately 45° gently drag the edge of your rectangular razor blade across rounded steel, stone, or other hardened surface to add a slight curl to the blade. Take note of the orientation, you want the “curled” primary edge to face upward, away from the plate as you scrape. (see below image) . * Note Before scraping the bed * - When scraping, the blade should be nearly parallel to the printer bed surface. the bottom of the scraper handle should be making contact with the bed as a guide to guarantee a consistent scraper angle as you scrape.
- Insert the razor blade into the infinity scraper handle and very gently test the glide performance on your plate. It's a snug, friction-fit. - Adjust the aggressiveness of the curl of the blade as needed, repeat step two until you get to your desired edge-curl aggressiveness. Printing Orientation :
- Increase perimeters to (4) for strength - Standing Up (no supports needed), outer brim may be needed depending on your adhesion - Laying down with the infinity symbol facing up. Supports are recommended for the overhang Take your time, and be gentle at first until you get used to the angle & functionality. I promise, once you get used to this scraper you will never go back to a plastic one.
Happy Scraping!
