Hermaeus Mora

The Whispering Abyss

Hermaeus Mora, known in this setting as The Whispering Abyss , is an enigmatic Outer Entity who presides over forbidden knowledge, secrets, and fate . Unlike most extraplanar beings, the Abyss does not seek worship in the traditional sense—it seeks curiosity , for curiosity is the thread that binds mortals to its endless web of truths.

Domain

- Alignment : Neutral (with alien tendencies)

- Portfolio : Forbidden Knowledge, Fate, Secrets, Mutation

- Symbol : A swirling black vortex with countless eyes peering outward.

- Plane : The Infinite Archive —a writhing, ink-black ocean filled with floating tomes, scrolls, and tendrils of living parchment. The plane is alive, and every secret ever whispered eventually drifts into its depths.

Nature and Influence

The Whispering Abyss manifests as a mass of eyes and tendrils , each eye representing a truth, a lie, or a possibility. It does not speak in words but in thought-echoes , riddles, and visions. Mortals who encounter its influence often describe:

- Dreams of ink and eyes

- Compulsions to write or record

- Sudden revelations that unravel sanity

Its gifts are never free. Every secret learned binds the seeker closer to the Abyss, and those who delve too deep risk becoming Archivists of Flesh —twisted beings who serve as living libraries.

Followers and Cults

Unlike other extraplanar patrons, the Abyss does not demand temples. Its cults are hidden societies , often masquerading as scholars, librarians, or astrologers. They believe:

- Knowledge is the only true power.

- Truth is mutable; perception shapes reality.

- The Abyss is not evil—it is inevitable.

Common practices:

- Ink Rituals : Followers tattoo secrets on their skin, believing the Abyss reads through flesh.

- The Offering of Eyes : Symbolic or literal sacrifice of sight in exchange for insight.

Boons and Curses

Those who serve the Abyss may gain:

- Whispers of Fate : Advantage on Intelligence checks related to lore or prophecy.

- Tendrils of Insight : Ability to cast Augury or Divination without material components (at a cost of exhaustion or sanity).

But they risk:

- Ocular Mutation : Extra eyes sprouting on body.

- Compulsive Recording : Must write down every secret learned, or suffer psychic damage.

Possible D&D Mechanics

- Warlock Patron : The Whispering Abyss (similar to Great Old One, but focused on knowledge and mutation).

- Cleric Domain : Knowledge with unique Abyssal features (e.g., tentacle-themed Channel Divinity).

- Artifacts :

- The Codex of Infinite Eyes : A living book that whispers forbidden spells.

- Ink of the Abyss : A black ichor that can rewrite reality when inscribed.

Adventure Hooks

- The Vanishing Library : A grand archive disappears overnight, leaving only pools of ink and whispers.

- The Eye Plague : A town suffers from a strange affliction—eyes growing on walls, floors, and even people.

- The Archivist’s Bargain : A scholar offers the party forbidden knowledge in exchange for a piece of their memory.
