The models fall into a few groups. There are small single pots and mini planters for one or two seeds, multi-cell trays and platforms that keep a row of pots together, and self-watering designs with a separate water reservoir. Decorative planters shaped after leaves or fruit appear too, and they differ mainly in wall thickness, height and how much soil they hold.

When choosing a model, look at the dimensions the author lists and compare them with the space you have and the root volume your seedlings need. Check whether drainage holes are part of the design, how many parts need to be joined, and whether the model needs supports. What size should a seedling pot be?
