I am currently abroad and away from my PC, but the next goal on this would be to get rid of the bat MMU and servo motor, and replace it with some thing more mechanical and simple.
been entertaining the idea of something like whats on the YUDX toolchanger where simple cheap oneway bearings and flat gears are used to open and close the extruder gears. only with one of the bearings flipped to account for the dual extrusion switching orientation (one side swings in, the other out away from the middle gear).
another idea is having both left and right gears on the same swinging arm type assembly except they are each flipped into mesh left and right using a bistable spring mechanism a bit like how a toggle switch works that is moved by a pin on the gantry. a bit like how proper printing did the dual extruder ender 3 on one of his older videos, except instead of toolheads swinging over centre, its the gears.
overall the idea is too make the toolhead lighter, cheaper, less electronic, and more simpler/reliable.
I will also be looking into different gear sets with the hope of aligning the filament paths straighter with each hotend. And also possibly redesigning the top switching part from scratch with the possibility of some kind of compact filament runout sensors as low as possible on each.
My only request I ask to whoever atleast improves on the concept themselves (even if it isn't for ad5m), is that they share forward the design again on printables. Would be very much appreciated and will help me stay motivated.
Ideally the end goal would be something that we can all adapt to many existing good single nozzle printers out there. I would love to also maybe one day do this to my qidi q2.
UPDATE:
have experimented in fusion the idea of using the batt mmu as a make shift H2d style extruder switcher with the x2d nozzle lifter mechanism and covers.
as im too busy with life and still learning the motion side of fusion, this remains unfinished, but thought i would still share it to inspire others more willing and capable to help bring this to to life on the ad5m or other printers.
there is still a lot of good single nozzle printers out there, and plenty of us who don't care about multicolor printing, wasteful slow mmus or complicated toolchangers, and really only want the flexibility for support material with engineering filaments, but don't want to keep giving money to big companies just for features than can be added to any old printer.
I give credit to bat mmu for the filament extruder switching mechanism, and sadly bambu lab for the nozzle switching idea
new step file included - forgive me if messy and let me know if any issues. please feel free to remix and share
For bom please look up bat mmu on github
i am attempting to do this with bmg gears but feel free to try others (I suspect hgx may be better)
you will also need the x2d switching mechanism with the nozzle cover lever, bambu lab store sells it cheap.
* for ad5m users, please be aware my ad5m has been completely gutted running no toolboard in the enclosure and the bed and motherboard have been replaced with different left over parts from other printers. the flashforge stock board is very locked down and also limited for extra heater and thermistor ports. I'm not sure if you can, but you may need to run additional boards such as the klipper expander for this to work, if that even is possible on the stock ad5m.
****************************************************************************************************************please note this is a work in progress for my ad5m, but to be adopted to other printers.
got my hands on the x2d switching mechanism, and loved how it was purely mechanical with no servo motors for tool changes, thought hey this is a really mad design that can be shoehorned to work on any printer.
decided to start working on a carriage mount for my ad5m, but uploading for people who are bit more crafty in cad to adopt this to other more open source models such as voron, sv08 etc.
i have only printed this in pla for fitting testing, as i dont have a 3d scanner, all modelling and measuring has been done with calipers the old school way and printed again and again till i get it right.
so far everything lines up well enough for the switching mechanism to feel like it does on the stock X2D carriage.
the mounting holes in the back are a few different sizes to allow you to find which hole size works best for you filament of choice
I havent yet put the holes for the main stationary hotend, and the holes for heat insert for the aux hotend, this is all on you and what ever you want to add on it.
this mount only serves as a proof of concept template for those willing to use it to cad up their own mounts and help improve on it.
